Kyle Shanahan explains why Jauan Jennings trade fell through

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shed more light on why the team's reported trade for former wide receiver Jauan Jennings fell through, confirming that the two sides had a conversation before Jennings ultimately decided to remain with the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaking with reporters Wednesday, Shanahan said that the report of San Francisco and Minnesota agreeing to trade terms was accurate, but said the situation was more involved than initially reported. The 49ers wanted to speak with Jennings before completing the deal, which required the teams to agree on terms that would allow them to contact the veteran receiver.

"We love Jauan. We have such a good relationship with Jauan, and we know him really well, and we didn't want to do it without talking to him first," Shanahan said. "He ended up saying that he was happy with where he was. It wasn't just like a definite 'no' at first, but he was like, 'man, Kyle, I'm pretty happy here and like and stuff,' and when I heard the way he talked and where we're at, I agreed with him."

Shanahan also pushed back on the suggestion that Jennings declined to participate in the FaceTime call, saying the two spoke for a while after the receiver had returned to Tennessee to spend time with his family.

Jennings spent his first five NFL seasons with San Francisco after being selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. He signed a one-year deal with Minnesota this offseason and has recorded six catches for 54 yards in six games.

The 49ers could still target a receiver at the Nov. 10 trade deadline, but it remains to be seen who they're interested in with less than a week to go.
