There was blame all across the back line – and further up the pitch too – but it was a shame to see Jeremy Jacquet take a big portion of it. Alisson was not happy with Jacquet for turning his back on Mason Greenwood’s equalising free-kick, and the Frenchman should have dealt with Archie Brown’s lofted ball better for the Turkish team’s winner.

Liverpool LOSE 3-2 to Fenerbahce… what is your reaction to that performance? 😳
There should be no question marks over Jacquet, who has been absolutely brilliant since arriving from Rennes this summer. However, the young defender was also at fault for Kai Havertz’s goal for Arsenal on Sunday, and he has just started to look a little like he needs a rest.
Jacquet has played in every one of Liverpool’s 15 matches so far this season, and on Wednesday it started to show. As a young defender, the France international will unfortunately have these periods, and it is imperative that Liverpool have an experienced alternative ready to step in. Luckily for them, they can count on Ronald Araujo for now, but, as Wednesday’s defeat quickly highlighted, they must ensure they bring the Uruguayan in for next season and beyond as well.
As things stand, Liverpool’s centre-back options next season will be Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni and Ifeanyi Ndukwe. Virgil van Dijk will hopefully stay for a little while longer, but that is not a given, and though they have three of the best young defenders in world football, they need an older head to help them out.
Up until the weekend, Jacquet had looked ready to take on that mantle himself. Despite being just 21, the No. 5 has looked like the mature post-Van Dijk leader Liverpool have been searching for.
Back-to-back matches in which he has struggled to live up to those standards have put forward the prospect of a different reality.
Jacquet is almost certainly still good enough to be a regular starter at Liverpool for years to come, but this week has just been a reminder that he is not the finished article just yet and should not be treated as though he is.
Van Dijk can obviously help with that, and though he has had some wobbles recently, the Dutchman must also stay to help the transition for Jacquet and Leoni. But Liverpool do not need to sell themselves short when they have another ready-made solution already in the building.
Araujo did not play on Wednesday and his leadership was certainly missing in the Reds’ back line. £47m may seem like a big price to play for a player who is not too far from his thirties, but as they look to build Jacquet into potentially the best defender on the planet, having the Uruguayan around to alleviate that pressure can be a massive help.
Araujo has had a brilliant loan spell so far, and while that may be all it was ever intended to be, he has shown that he can play a crucial role in Liverpool’s squad building into the future too.
