York Table Tennis Winter League begins with five divisions

Following a restructure, there are now five divisions (four of eight teams and one of twelve) rather than four divisions (of eleven or twelve teams), in the hope of making it more competitive.

In Division One, last season’s top two met in the first week, with last season’s champions Coneysthorpe and runners-up York RI A sharing the spoils in a 5-5 draw.

Filip Wojtkowiak won his three singles for RI.

However, York Vikings are setting the early pace, having won all three of their matches, including a 7-3 defeat of York RI A.

In Division Two, Wigginton A and Clarence A have won their opening matches, with Muhammad Ismail winning eight out of nine singles for Wigginton A.

Paul Seekings was in top form, being unbeaten for Clarence C in their 8-2 defeat of Ryedale A.

In Division Three, Ryedale B and Wigginton D have won their opening matches, with Alaa Albaroudi (Wigginton D) and Ilhoo (Ryedale B) unbeaten in their singles matches.

Fast-improving junior Henry Hollings won his three singles for Red Goat B in their 8-2 defeat of Topspin B.

Wilberfoss A and Wigginton E have won their opening matches in Division 4, with Kevin Prime winning all of his eight singles matches for Wilberfoss A.

Youngsters Nate Merrill (Wigginton E) and Flynn Payne (York RI F) have both won 5 out of 6 singles and are showing great promise for the future.

Rob Sorley (Reg Goat E) has won all six of his singles matches.
