Brent Venables praises Buster Faulkner's approach on offense

The Oklahoma Sooners will take on one of college football's best stories this Saturday. The Florida Gators had four losing seasons in their last five, but now sit at 5-3 and are ranked No. 24 in the College Football Playoff rankings in Year 1 under Jon Sumrall.

A big reason for the change this season has been the offensive resurgence. The Gators ranked No. 104 in total offense last year. They averaged 204.6 through the air and 136.8 on the ground, while scoring just 21.6 points per game. This year, under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, the Gators rank No. 37 in total offense. Florida averages 249.3 through the air and 176 on the ground, while scoring 35.6 points per game.

Head coach Brent Venables broke down the challenges Faulkner's offense presents.

"I think the best thing that he does is look at things from a defensive structure," Venables said. "He understands defense and how to attack defenses. His time probably with Kirby (Smart), amongst others, (helped). He played the game collegiately. He was a quarterback. He's been a winner everywhere he goes. He's a tough guy and knows the value of running the football and the things that come with that."

That balance between the passing game and a physical rushing attack has made Florida a much tougher offense to defend. Faulkner's ability to identify defensive weaknesses and build a game plan around them gives the Gators multiple ways to create problems, especially when they can keep defenses guessing about what is coming next. Oklahoma will need to be disciplined against the run while remaining alert to the opportunities Florida creates through its passing game.

For the Sooners, slowing down that offensive rhythm will be a major priority. Florida is scoring 14 points more per game than it did last season, and its improved production gives the defense far less room for mistakes. Oklahoma will need to win early downs, limit explosive plays and force the Gators into uncomfortable passing situations if it hopes to contain one of the biggest offensive turnarounds in the SEC.
