Manchester United’s bad season got worse Sunday with an atrocious, historic start to their home match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick’s Red Devils conceded 61 seconds into the game, then again before the end of the fourth minute to go down two goals faster than in any match across their 148-year history.
The good news for United is Matheus Cunha won a penalty before the quarter-hour mark. Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty for 2-1 in the 16th minute.
While timekeeping may not have been reliable in the late 19th century, it’s spot on here and goals from Alysson and then Nicolas Jackson featured substandard stuff at the back.
Villa one-touched their way from left-to-right across United’s defense before Alysson slotted through the legs of a sad and somewhat-unsighted Senne Lammens.
Then United were slow to the second ball after Leny Yoro partially-cleared a hard free kick, Lammens conceding a rebound that Jackson poked home for 2-0.
