Nottingham Forest have a knack of signing players from South America who sign and then barely play before heading back to their roots, and Cuiabano is the latest.

Gustavo Scarpa and Carlos Miguel proved two signings from Brazil who signed for Forest and made little impact. Scarpa had some issues living in England and some personal issues, but Miguel looked some way short of the required quality to play in the Premier League.

Now, Cuiabano is on his own journey back in Brazil, having spent a few weeks training with Forest and taking part in one under-21 match during his brief spell at the City Ground before returning to his homeland to sign for Vasco da Gama.

Vasco want Cuiabano on the cheap

According to Super Vasco, Cuiabano is wanted by Vasco on a permanent transfer when his loan expires. However, they’re not going to part with the £8.7 million that Forest want to recoup for the left-sided defender.

Cuiabano isn’t going to get a look in at Forest, and there is every possibility that the Reds might look to land another left-sided wing-back during the January transfer window.

Vasco are going to submit a proposal to sign Cuiabano, with the player keen to stay in Brazil with his family now settled on home soil and unwilling to relocate to Europe.

The offer from the Brazilian club is going to come at around £4.4 million, and Forest have to weigh up whether or not to cut their losses on this transfer.

Forest need to learn transfer market lessons

In the summer window, Forest prioritised quality over quantity, with just five new players coming to the club and one of those a third-choice goalkeeper, Steven Benda.

Signing players like Cuiabano makes very little sense when the reality is they’re probably not going to have the required quality to make an impact in the Premier League.

Thankfully, George Syrianos has been given the keys when it comes to transfers, and together with Glasner, the hope is that things can stay far more sensible in coming transfer windows.
