The first ODI between New Zealand and India at Eden Park in Auckland has produced another spectacular fielding moment, with Virat Kohli stealing the spotlight through an extraordinary catch. At 37, the former Indian captain continues to demonstrate remarkable athleticism and reflexes, reminding everyone why he remains one of the finest fielders in international cricket.

Kohli produced a stunning one-handed diving effort at second slip to send Nathan Smith back to the pavilion. The catch not only added to India’s growing list of memorable moments in the field but also left spectators and teammates impressed.

The remarkable dismissal took place during the 29th over of New Zealand’s innings, with Anshul Kamboj operating with the ball. The Indian pacer bowled a probing good-length delivery outside off-stump, which Smith attempted to play. However, the New Zealand batter could only manage a thick outside edge. The ball travelled rapidly towards the second-slip region, staying dangerously close to the ground.

Kohli, stationed in the slip cordon, reacted instantly and threw himself towards his right. Stretching his right hand to its maximum, the veteran fielder managed to get underneath the ball and complete a sensational diving catch just inches above the turf.

The dismissal was referred to the third umpire for confirmation, who eventually gave it in India’s favour. Kohli immediately broke into an animated celebration, sprinting towards his teammates before showcasing his trademark bow-and-arrow celebration. The effort once again highlighted his exceptional fitness, sharp reflexes and commitment on the field.

India bowlers run riot as New Zealand collapse

Kohli’s spectacular effort was another highlight in what has been a dominant bowling performance from India. After winning the toss, captain Shubman Gill decided to field first, and the decision has worked brilliantly for the visitors. India’s fast bowlers made an immediate impact, with Arshdeep Singh providing the early breakthrough by dismissing Will Young for nine runs. Gurnoor Brar also maintained pressure on the New Zealand batters, ensuring that the hosts struggled to establish partnerships.

New Zealand briefly attempted to recover, but India’s bowlers continued to strike at crucial intervals. Axar Patel also played his part in the field, with a mix-up resulting in Daryl Mitchell‘s run-out after Glenn Phillips failed to complete the opportunity. Kamboj has been particularly impressive with the ball. The right-arm pacer first dismissed New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who edged the delivery onto his stumps.

Kamboj then picked up another important wicket when Kohli completed his stunning catch to remove Smith for just one run. Kohli was not finished with his fielding contributions either. Shortly after the spectacular slip catch, he safely held a straightforward opportunity at short cover to help Arshdeep dismiss Kyle Jamieson. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs.
