The Hornets emerged as 1-0 victors over the Imps on Tuesday night, courtesy of a Stephy Mavididi strike moments after halftime.

It was an important result, after a scrappy, hard-fought performance, on multiple levels. Three points alleviated the immediate pressure on Dionisi, even if only for one game, while, crucially, it dragged Watford further away from the relegation zone.

At full-time, Dionisi was visibly elated as he embraced his coaching staff, a stark difference from the anger and disappointment following his side's collapse at Carrow Road just days ago.

Speaking after the game, the Italian discussed his delight for his players and supporters as much as himself, but insisted that it is important to build on the result.

“It’s a good night for everyone," he beamed. "It’s a good night for our supporters, and I’m happy for them, I’m happy for my team, and I’m happy for my club.

“It’s one match, but it’s important to get the three points.

“When we played with the ball in the first half,  sometimes it was difficult, because it’s not easy for my players to play.

“But in the first half of the second half, we found the goal, and it’s important for us.”

Dionisi is under no illusions that building on the result will be no easy task, however, with a tough test at home to league leaders Middlesbrough awaiting his side on Saturday.

“It’s important for our future; it’s important to prepare for the next match, because in our next match, we will play at home in our stadium, against a big team, at this moment the best team in the league, and it will be difficult. It is better to prepare when we’ve won.”
