He was credited with the assist for Ezri Konsa’s opener, but otherwise he struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single shot before being replaced by Havertz after 68 minutes. Chris Sutton was among those unimpressed, describing him as “pretty ineffective” on BBC commentary.

Paul Merson assesses Viktor Gyokeres’ display vs Everton

Speaking on Sky Sports News after the game, Paul Merson wasn’t convinced by the Swede’s display, though he did point to the challenge he faced.

“Not really for me,” Merson said. “You know, for me, I think first of all he’s right. Hold the ball up, control it, send it back and off you go. It’s like it’s a fight, and it was hard today. He’s playing against Tarkowski, who wants that kind of player.”

Merson explained that Everton captain James Tarkowski is far more comfortable against a physical, old-fashioned centre-forward than a striker who drifts around and pulls him out of position. “He’s going to have a fight,” he said. “And he didn’t have a shot in the game. Tarkowski, you know, he’s a good defender. I think he’s very underrated, in my opinion.”

Gyokeres was up against a tough opponent, and there’s no question about his effort, but the goals still aren’t coming. He hasn’t scored for Arsenal since May, despite scoring 21 times in all competitions last season and hitting four in four for Sweden during the international break.

His next chance to get off the mark should come at Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. A goal against League Two opposition might be just what he needs before the trip to Anfield.
