Cameron Bancroft 'not as feverish' about fading Test recall hopes

The Western Australia opener has scored a Sheffield Shield century against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, yet remains at peace with the likelihood of never playing Test cricket again.

Cameron Bancroft has conceded that his hopes of returning to the Australian Test side have all but faded, even as he continues to produce strong performances in the Sheffield Shield. The Western Australia opener struck 186 against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, a knock that represented his 34th first-class century and his 15th for Western Australia, yet the innings arrived at a time when the national side was scrambling to find a settled opening combination.

Bancroft last appeared in a Test match for Australia against England in August 2019. His international career had already been interrupted by the nine-month suspension he served following the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town, an episode that effectively ended his first stint as a regular Test opener.

Despite being the leading run-scorer in the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield season and finishing second in the 2023-24 campaign for Western Australia, Bancroft was not selected when Australia named their squads for the series against the West Indies or for the tour of Pakistan. Selectors instead trialled Steve Smith as an opener and allowed David Warner to complete his retirement tour, leaving Bancroft without a recall.

"I'm definitely not as feverish now about my opportunities to play at that level. I'm fully accepting of the fact that the likelihood is that I won't play at that level again. If an opportunity came I'd be very grateful and I'd take it, but I'm at peace with playing at the level and the opportunity I had there," Bancroft said on ABC Sport.

Why has Bancroft been overlooked despite consistent Shield form?

Bancroft's domestic record over the past several seasons has been difficult to ignore. His 186 against South Australia at Adelaide Oval came while Australia's Test top order was in a state of flux, yet the selectors did not turn to him for either the West Indies series or the Pakistan tour. The decision to trial Smith at the top of the order and to accommodate Warner's farewell meant there was no opening for Bancroft in those squads.

His record since the 2022-23 season, when he led all Shield run-scorers, and his runner-up finish in 2023-24 underline that the omissions were not a consequence of poor domestic form. The 186 at Adelaide Oval, his 34th first-class hundred, only reinforced that point, though it has not altered the selectors' thinking.

What is the state of Australia's opening combination heading into the home summer?

Australia have used nine different opening partnerships across their past 19 Test matches, a level of instability that has drawn attention ahead of a home series against New Zealand in December and overseas tours of India and England in 2027. The repeated changes at the top of the order have prevented any settled chemistry from developing between Australia's openers. Bancroft acknowledged the situation from the outside, and elaborated his own emotions around the missed opportunities.

"From the outside there's lots of changes and thoughts and theories. It's probably something that hasn't been figured out or solved yet. Naturally you feel a bit of dejection. It did bring me down for sure. When you want something so badly and you feel like you've given 100 per cent and it's not quite enough; naturally you feel those emotions," he said.
