Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has raised concerns over the team's selection decisions and batting problems following their disappointing Test series defeat against South Africa. Gilchrist believes the team needs to address some important issues if they want to remain among the best sides in the world.

Australia recently lost the three-match Test series to South Africa and also lost their top position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. Amid this, Steve Smith expected to return for New Zealand Tests as Andrew McDonald breaks silence on injury concern.

Adam Gilchrist questions Australia's selection decisions after South Africa defeat

Adam Gilchrist does not believe Pat Cummins' decision to bowl first in Cape Town was the biggest reason behind their 176-run defeat in the three-match Test series decider. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter feels Australia's frequent changes in selection and batting combinations have become a bigger concern over the years.

One example that highlights this problem is Steve Smith's move to the opening position in 2024. Australia made this decision to create space for Cameron Green in the middle order, as the team management considered Green one of their best batting options. However, the experiment did not work as expected, and they moved Smith to his usual batting position.

Adam Gilchrist was quoted as saying by SEN WA Breakfast: “Going back a bit, there are other things that were confusing. There's just been a whole inconsistency around selection, but that's the thing—they don't conform to what history has shown is the way to go about it.

That’s fine; they have won a lot of games of cricket, but the bowling first didn't bother me. I mean, it surprised me, but if you win the toss on day one of any Test match and choose to bowl first, and you get all 10 wickets that day, I reckon you've achieved your objective.”

Gilchrist also questioned Australia's approach towards giving players enough opportunities to establish themselves in the team. He pointed towards Josh Inglis, who had been around the national setup for several years but had not received a consistent run in the playing XI.

He also referred to Nic Maddinson, highlighting how players can find themselves in difficult situations when selection plans keep changing. Gilchrist said that such decisions can create confusion among players, both inside and outside the Australian team.

Gilchrist added, “The toss to me wasn't one of the major blunders. It doesn't conform to the way you do it, but they were in a winning position well and truly late in that game or deep in that game. The selection… I can only assume there are a lot of confused batsmen around the country.”

Australia have lost four of their last seven Test matches, which is below the standards expected from a team of their quality. Gilchrist believes they have struggled to handle important moments, particularly during overseas tours.

The upcoming tours of India and England in 2027 will provide another major test of their strength and ability to compete away from home. Amid this, Marnus Labuschagne's Test future in danger as Andrew McDonald confirms selection review.

Interestingly, Gilchrist is not calling for major changes to Australia's experienced bowling attack just yet. He believes that the senior fast bowlers still have an important role to play. Although Nathan Lyon did not make the same impact in South Africa as Simon Harmer.

He believes the team must identify and settle its future batting combination while its experienced bowling group is still available. This will help Australia build a strong foundation before senior bowlers eventually retire. He also defended Lyon despite his poor show on the Proteas tour.

Gilchrist signed off by saying, "There have been things amiss, mainly around the batting. A lot of people are focusing on the aging bowling unit—I don't know where you could have, up to this point, said that any one of those big four needed to finish their careers. I think they needed to be a bit more firm about what their batting unit's going to be going forward whilst the bowling's been so strong.”
