MPs are now demanding that Harry Kane is knighted following his Ballon d'Or triumph. They're backing calls by the Daily Star to make him a Sir after he was crowned the world's best footballer on Monday.

Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan said: “Harry Kane is a superb footballer and a brilliant role model for the millions of young boys and girls who want to play the game. I hope he joins the pantheon of England’s footballing knights.”

Her party colleague Clive Efford, MP for Eltham and Chislehurst, added: “When his career is over of course he should (get a knighthood) - the travesty is Bobby Moore never got one.”

The Bayern Munich goal machine - he netted 73 times for club and country last season - is the first Englishman in a quarter of a century to win the coveted Ballon d'Or.

Andy Burnham’s spokeswoman said: “It caps a remarkable season and Harry continues to set a brilliant example to young players across the country, and the PM knows the whole nation will be incredibly proud of him.

“And, hopefully, there’s another trophy to celebrate with England before too long.”

Kane's victory also comes exactly 70 years after Stanley Matthews became the first-ever recipient of the award, adding further flourish to a night that will go down as one of the highlights of his career.

Michael Owen was the last player from England to receive the prestigious individual accolade in 2001 and Kane also follows in the footsteps of Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan to become the fifth Ballon d’Or winner from England.

It promoted bookies Ladbrokes to shortened their odds to 2/1 that England’s all-time record goal scorer, 33, makes the honours list this year.

Spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: "Calls for Harry Kane to be knighted are growing louder and we have been forced to slash the odds on him becoming a Sir sooner rather than later.”
