Julian Ward and new Liverpool coach impressed by prolific striker knocking at Andoni Iraola's door

Will Wright scored a second UEFA Youth League hat-trick as Liverpool Under-19s continued their unbeaten European campaign with a 5-3 win over Fenerbahce at Pendik Stadium on Wednesday.

Josh Sonni-Lambie and Finn Inglethorpe also struck for Rob Page's side as they delivered a convincing performance in Istanbul.

The ECHO was at the game to review the proceedings. Here's who caught the eye as the young Reds secured their second win in the competition....

Mr Wright

Will Wright is certainly warming to European football. The Liverpool captain plundered another away-day hat-trick here to take his tally to 13 for the campaign across all competitions.

The first came inside three minutes when his header squirmed through the goalkeeper’s grasp before he registered another from the penalty spot shortly after.

Josh Sonni-Lambie, who won the spot kick, was affronted by the sight of Wright assuming responsibility initially, resulting in a regrettable on-field spat that could have been avoided.

It was commendable that Sonni-Lambie felt confident enough to step up but as a dyed-in-the-wool No.9, it was only correct that skipper Wright assumed the duty. He made no mistake, ensuring a brief flashpoint was quickly put to bed and it was later played down by manager Rob Page.

Wright completed his second successive hat-trick on the road in the Youth League after impressive work from Luca Eden. More on the 15-year-old later.

Once more, the headlines and the match-ball belonged to Wright, and the post-match chatter involving sporting director Julian Ward, who was at Pendik Stadium for the game, centred around the hat-trick hero.

Andoni Iraola has shown a willingness to give youth a chance when making changes for the Champions League and with Hugo Ekitike still sidelined, surely Wright is staking a real claim now for further inclusion at senior level if he feels Alexander Isak could use a rest here and there?

On this evidence, in this sort of form, there’s little more he can do to catch the eye of those watching. That includes Luis Fernando Iubel, the newly-appointed coach who acts as the connector between Academy and first-team levels. The Brazilian watched the match alongside Ward and both were left impressed.

Eden Project

Another UEFA Youth League appearance. Another step in the right direction of midfielder Eden.

After becoming the youngest scorer in the Reds’ Youth League history when he registered against LASK last month, the 15-year-old was once more excellent in the centre of the park here.

With a physicality that betrays the fact he has another five years before he is ineligible, Eden relished the midfield battle in the torrential downpour on Pendik Stadium.

Snapping into tackles and always willing to duel in the engine room, Eden played a big part in helping Liverpool establish their early dominance and his surging run and pass for Wright's third was a touch of class.

It's easy to see why there is such excitement around the Wirral-born midfielder and this was another impressive display. He looks so at ease at this level.

O'Connor a prospect

The right-back position has been near the top of the Liverpool discourse for the past 12 months or so, with as many as nine players having been deployed there at one point or another since the start of last season.

Many of those trialled in the role during that time have done so without it being their natural position and it seems that trend is extending to the Academy ranks.

It's yielded mixed results at senior level but Oliver O'Connor showcased why he looks so at home there during this wild and ultimately fun 5-3 win.

O'Connor, who has been at the club since the age of six, played in a number of inviting balls in the first half and was constantly looking to burst into advanced areas to supply the telling pass to the likes of Wright and Sonni-Lambie.

He had a couple of well-struck free-kicks that were saved and provided a timely interception in the first half as Fenerbahce sensed a way back into the game.

The versatile operator may be preferred in more advanced positions by Page ebut when called upon at right full-back here, he was excellent.
