At Eden Park in Auckland, Virat Kohli delivered a match-winning performance on the eve of his 38th birthday, scoring 74 off 51 balls with 13 fours and a six. India secured a five-wicket victory in the rain-curtailed encounter and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Kohli's intelligent batting drew particular praise from cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, who highlighted the precision and awareness that defined the innings. Gavaskar observed that Kohli's shot selection was underpinned by a clear understanding of field placement and the gaps available to him.
"When there was no fielder in the deep, he played it in the air. So there was no risk. When there was a fielder in the deep, he played along the ground. He knew where the fielder was, and that's extremely important. You have to hit the ball far from the fielder," Gavaskar said on Sony Sports.
The former India captain explained how Kohli's decision-making at the crease reflected a sophisticated reading of where fielders were positioned and where gaps existed. This awareness allowed Kohli to take calculated risks when the field permitted and exercise caution when danger was present.
Gavaskar also analysed the technical elements that made Kohli's batting so effective during the match. The former India captain noted the strength of Kohli's bottom-hand work and the way he deployed his hands differently depending on the area of the field he was targeting.
"His bottom-hand game is extremely strong. He uses the top hand when he drives on the off side. When he plays on the on side, he plays a lot with the bottom hand. He batted extremely well. Tomorrow (November 5) is his birthday, and he gave a gift to the fans," Gavaskar said.
Kohli's 74 came during a crucial 113-run partnership with Shubman Gill, who contributed 37 runs as the pair added 113 runs for the second wicket. The innings also saw Kohli reach a significant milestone, drawing level with Ricky Ponting on 1,971 ODI runs against New Zealand. Kohli had struck his 80th ODI fifty off just 35 balls, demonstrating the aggressive intent he brought to the chase from the outset.
