Carlisle United: Rob Elliot hails Jonah Lowes potential

The teenage midfielder produced a hugely memorable moment with the first career goal that sealed the Blues’ 4-2 win at Altrincham.

It came in only Lowes’ second league appearance for the club, the 18-year-old having been recalled from a loan spell at Darlington the day before.

And head coach Elliot says he has every faith that Lowes will become a big player for the Cumbrians as he continues to develop.

United cut short his loan spell at a time they lost midfielders Miguel Azeez and Harvey Bunker to three-game suspensions.

Lowes then came off the bench to take his chance at Altrincham and Elliot said: “I'm so pleased with him.

“Although we’ve been forced into it a little bit, I didn't want to bring him back off loan just for the sake of cover and not get his minutes.

“I wanted to make sure when he got back he was going to make an impact and he would be getting minutes, which I knew he would [on Saturday].

“We will see what we do next Saturday [against Salford City in the FA Cup].

“[The situation] gives him a real shot now, but his development's not just this season.

“He's going to be a really good player for us.”

Academy product Lowes rounded off a United counter-attack in added time at Altrincham, sparking big celebrations involving the young Cumbrian at a packed away end.

“I'm so pleased he got the goal because I thought his performance when he came on was above his years,” added Elliot.

“He's a real favourite in the group because of the way he trains, and the way his attitude is.”

Lowes is the latest home-grown prospect to come through at United and Elliot said it is more evidence of good work at youth level with the Blues.

“I can't say enough about the work the academy do,” he added.

“It's another young player coming through making an impact and they [the coaches] deserve all the credit for Jonah.

“I've just been fortunate enough to be able to inherit him.

“Saturday was a brilliant, brilliant moment for him and his family and I hope they were there to see it.”
