Five days of rest may have rejuvenated the New York Rangers, but it wasn’t enough to snap their latest skid. They recorded their fourth straight regulation loss Sunday night, falling 4-1 to the Edmonton Oilers at Madison Square Garden.

Edmonton completed a weekend sweep of the League’s New York clubs, holding the Islanders scoreless Saturday afternoon in a 4-0 win.

The Rangers allowed the game’s first goal for a fourth consecutive game, when Connor McDavid buried his ninth goal of the season less than a minute after puck drop.

McDavid extended his point streak to all 15 games this season with a goal and an assist, padding his League-leading point total to 39. He has 10 goals and 27 points in 18 career games against the Blueshirts, recording at least one point in all but two contests.

Oilers goalie Matt Tomkins stopped 28 of 29 shots in his season debut, making his first NHL appearance since April 17, 2024, when he suited up for the Tampa Bay Lightning. It marked his seventh career NHL start, with each of the previous six coming during the 2023-24 season.

Dylan Garand allowed three goals on 24 shots in his ninth start of 2026-27. The Rangers rookie owns a 1-5-1 record since Oct. 15.

Pavel Dorofeyev scored New York’s lone goal at 13:22 of the second period. The 26-year-old has points in five straight games and goals in two of his past three. Defenseman Scott Morrow earned the primary assist on the play, drawing into the lineup in place of the injured Sean Durzi. He logged 15:02 in his season debut and finished with a plus-one rating.

Colton Dach scored twice for the Oilers, including an empty-netter, and Evan Bouchard factored on each of Edmonton’s three goals against Garand.

It didn’t take long for the League’s leading scorer to make his mark. McDavid gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into regulation, turning on the jets at his own blue line and elevating the puck over Garand’s glove. He split Tye Kartye and Oliver Bjorkstrand in the neutral zone and beat Vladislav Gavrikov to the net, reaching a top speed of 22 miles per hour.

Dach extended the Edmonton lead to 2-0 at 6:19 of the first period, taking a turnaround shot from the left circle that caught Garand off guard and squeaked under his pads.

Bouchard nearly recorded his third point of the frame at 8:52, besting Garand with a slap shot from the point, but the goal was waved off for goalie interference.

He scored one that counted at 9:49 of the second period, after a holding penalty by Noah Laba in the offensive zone gave Edmonton its first power play of the game. Bouchard unleashed his trademark slap shot from the point, whistling the puck above Garand’s blocker to make it 3-0.

Dorofeyev cut into the deficit three minutes and 33 seconds later, collecting Morrow’s rebound in the slot. He patiently skated left and squeezed a wrist shot inside the left post to end Tomkin’s shutout bid, capitalizing on a yard sale in front of the net.

New York outshot Edmonton 15-6 and posted a 51.62 percent expected-goal share 5v5 in the second period, according to Natural Stat Trick. But all things considered, they were fortunate the Oilers managed only one goal in the middle frame.

McDavid led a 2-on-1 rush at 1:50 of the second, only to be stifled by Adam Fox, who knocked down the Edmonton captain’s saucer pass and secured the takeaway.

Fox laid out to block a scoring chance from Ryan Shea off the rush at 15:34, though second-year forward Gabe Perreault got the distinction, deflecting the shot with his stick shaft.

Garand took care of business himself in the final nine seconds of the second, denying Mattias Ekholm at the doorstep with an outstretched right pad after McDavid connected with the Oilers defenseman on a sharp cross-crease pass.

New York stood tall against the League’s No. 3 power play midway through the third period, after consecutive holding penalties from Kartye and Will Cuylle gave Edmonton a 5-on-3 advantage for one minute and 28 seconds. Garand made three saves with the Rangers short two skaters, denying Draisaitl twice and stopping a left-dot shot from McDavid at 10:07.

It made little difference at the final horn, however. Coach Mike Sullivan pulled Garand with 2:50 left in the third, and Dach sealed the Oilers’ third straight win with an empty-net goal at 19:20.

The Rangers look to end their four-game skid Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues, as they continue a four-game homestand on Garden ice.
