Liverpool travelled to Turkey to take on Fenerbahce on matchday four of the Champions League. In a fixture that presented an ideal opportunity to rotate and hand valuable minutes to emerging talent, Trey Nyoni was handed a start and duly repaid that faith with a historic goal.
The young English midfielder, born in 2007, broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Seizing upon a clearance from the opposition defence, Nyoni adjusted his body sharply to unleash a right-footed volley that wrong-footed the goalkeeper courtesy of a deflection.
It marked a watershed moment for the Reds academy graduate: at 19 years and 127 days, he became the second-youngest player to find the net for Liverpool in Champions League history. Above him in the record books stands only Trent Alexander-Arnold, who opened his account at 19 years and 10 days.
