Newbury Town manager Devonn Reid admits even he could not have scripted a start quite like this in the Thames Valley Premier League.
With an astonishing 60 goals scored, a formidable defensive record of just three goals conceded in 12 league matches, and an unbeaten run to open the campaign, Town are setting the local scene alight.
Central to that run has been the terrifying form of striker Harrison Luffrum, who bagged a hat-trick in the latest victory over AFC Winkfield to reach 16 goals in 12 games.
When asked if Luffrum continues to impress and prove his selection right week-in, week-out, the Newbury boss said: “Yeah he’s got 16 in 12 games, you know what I mean.
“Even last year, their top goal scorer had got 16 goals in the whole season.
“So it is always good when you look at it in that perspective like, he’s doing something right, we’re doing something right.
“He’s hungry for it, he’s upset when he misses the chances, he wants to get as many as he can and help the team to our end goal, which is good.”
Luffrum’s relentless drive on the pitch has not gone unnoticed by his teammates, creating a standard that Reid believes raises the level of the entire squad.
On whether that mentality drives those around him, Reid said: “It gives them a sense of belief as well, like: ‘If he’s doing that, I should be doing that.’
“And it does drive everyone else – it just gives you that added confidence as well.
“It is good to see in players and that’s what you want predominantly from everyone, just everyone wanting to go out there and do better and be better each week.”
While the attacking output has drawn headlines, Town’s backline has been equally dominant, surrendering just three goals across 12 league fixtures.
Addressing what aspect of his side's performances has impressed him most during this run, Devonn Reid said: “Our determination to be defensively sound.
“Before we go out and score any goals, we have to be set up defensively sound to not concede any, because like I said, we’re always going to go out and score a goal at some point.
“We know we have that ability to go and do that, but it’s always having that same pride as defending your goal as well as attacking the others.
“We set up to make sure we don’t concede and we put in an effort, more effort than anyone else – if their running hard, we have to run harder – we don’t let our quality be just our main aspect.”
Stepping into the hotseat at the start of the season, Reid admits that the sheer scale and volume of Town's early success has exceeded all anticipation.
Reflecting on being 12 games undefeated with 60 goals scored, Reid said: “I’ve had good starts like last year at Westford, we were 12 in 12 as well there, but the amount of goals we’ve scored is on another level.
“I’m happy with that because that means that the things that we are working on are working this year compared to me last year.
“This is the best squad I’ve had as a manager – I would openly say that.
“Everyone is hungry, everyone wants to score.
“We’ve got so many different goal scorers, it’s not always – unless it’s Luffrum – not always the same person on the score sheet.
“Young Stan scored again, his tally is adding up for a 16-year-old boy – it’s crazy stuff.
“I would never had thought it was going to go so well.”
