Something to mull over.
It is, in football, amazing how quickly fortunes can change.
It wasn’t long ago the readership were doubting whether Jack Wilshere had the acumen to take us where we crave to be, back in the EFL Championship, now, a mere 4 games later, the 12 points accumulated, from 4 successive wins, have lifted us to 4th place in the league table.
However, with another 33 EFL League One games to go, a lot can still happen.
On Saturday night, in between answering the door for Halloween, my mind started to drift.
Last week, I ran an article – its-getting-closer – where I covered the inference that although the Power Court development was running a little behind schedule, it was still on course to be ready, for occupation, for the 2028/2029 season.
Working through the maths that means we will be playing at Kenilworth Road for the remainder of the 2026/2027 season and the whole of the 2027/2028 season, before we make the trek to the promised land.
It may seem a relatively short period of time, but several scenarios could develop.
Although the desire to return to the EFL Championship, this season, is prominent, it could have complications.
Being acutely honest, I have to question whether our current squad is good enough to hold their own in the EFL Championship.
There is still a lot of work to be done on reshaping the squad, there is a lot of driftwood out on loan, and we seem content to rely on the loan system, a little too much for my liking.
Now whether, if we do get promotion this season, there are sufficient funds to bolster the squad to give us a realistic chance of retaining EFL Championship status, only a few are party to.
My fear is that if promotion is achieved in May 2027, we will spend the 2027/2028 struggling to avoid relegation, a struggle that could be doomed to failure, meaning that we would open our tenure of Power Court as an EFL League One club.
As a result, the devil inside of me, is prompting the inference that a failure to get promoted this season, just missing out, but achieving it in the 2027/2028 season, could be the better option, meaning Power Court would, in its first season, be hosting EFL Championship football.
I know I am making some dangerous assumptions, but do I have a point or am I due a spell in Traitors Gate?
