Oxford United to hold Remembrance tribute against Reading

Oxford United will honour servicemen and women during their clash against Reading with a ceremony, card display, and charity shirt auction.

Players will wear special-edition shirts featuring the Poppy, which will be signed and auctioned after the match to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

A spokesman for Oxford United said: "A special pre-match card display will take place in the East Stand as the players emerge from the tunnel to mark our Remembrance fixture.

"To help maximise the impact of the display, all Season and Match Ticket Holders in the East Stand are asked to be in their seats by 7:30pm.

"We ask all supporters in the East Stand to raise the card attached to their seat as the players are about to walk out, creating a special tribute to mark the occasion."

A pre-match ceremony will take place on the pitch, with Oxford United head coach Aaron Ramsey and Reading manager Leam Richardson joining supporters and veterans Paul Charlett and Colin Edwards to lay wreaths.

Mr Charlett, representing Oxford United supporters, served 12 years in the Royal Marines and was injured in Afghanistan.

Since leaving the military, he has worked as a firefighter with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr Edwards, representing Reading, is a former RAF Air Movements Operator and lifelong Royals supporter.

Representatives from the Royal British Legion’s Oxfordshire and Berkshire branches will also take part in the ceremony.

A spokesman said: "A period of silence will follow, accompanied by a live performance of the Last Post by Mr Michael Bunce."

Mr Bunce served 30 years in the RAF and now works for Boeing as an aircraft maintenance technician supporting the RAF’s C-17 fleet.

He has been a member of the RAF Brize Norton Voluntary Band for more than a decade.

Supporters are reminded that the period of silence will begin and end on the referee’s whistle.

Those arriving near to the 7.45pm kick-off are asked to enter the stadium quietly and respectfully.

The club spokesman said: "At half-time, Oxford United will welcome back the Royal Air Force Air Cadets from 1460 (Banbury) Squadron marching band to OX4.

"The band will perform a medley of military pieces in tribute to those who have served."

Tickets for the match are selling quickly, with many sections of the stadium already sold out. The ticket office will be open from 10am until kick-off.
