Manchester United boss Michael Carrick remains under huge pressure despite the club’s 3-2 win over AS Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The Red Devils mounted a second-half comeback to beat Gian Piero Gasperini’s side thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Matheus Cunha brace, but the result has failed to secure Carrick’s future in the Old Trafford dugout.

The 45-year-old remains the Man Utd boss as things stand, however The Sun report that he hasn’t been told if he will still be in charge after their Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have only won one of their opening nine league fixtures so far this season and due to the upcoming November international break, it’s understood that Carrick’s position remains untenable, despite the aforementioned victory versus Roma.

The likes of Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann have been earmarked as possible replacements for Carrick if Man Utd decide to sack him, with the club set to make their decision after the clash against Villa.

What has Michael Carrick said?

When asked if plans are in place for the international break during his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Aston Villa, Carrick admitted: “Just carry on as absolute normal.

“Maybe three or four senior players will be in and around [the training ground], but we’ll certainly train next week and maybe have the weekend off.

“We’ll see how that develops, who’s left behind, who’s with us and what they need. But there’ll certainly be training next week.

“Whatever happens, what’s going to happen is going to happen in terms of the game (against Villa), and we’ve got to prepare right, looking forward to it.

“I said the other night I was really looking forward to the game going into it, I genuinely was. I wasn’t making anything up there for you.

“Playing at home on the back of the other night, the supporters hopefully looking forward to coming and energised and feeling good about what they might see. And we’ve got to repay that.”

He added: “I think international breaks are always a time when talking about the players that aren’t going away and for the staff, I think there is a little bit to re-energise and freshen up.

“I think some of the players that go away in internationals, they get freshened up in a different environment, so there is an element of that, but I don’t really need it. I’m fine as I am.”
