Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon faces a marquee matchup in Week 9 against Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver Michael Wilson.
Witherspoon has been every bit the first-team All-Pro performer that he is through the first eight games of the year. He has recorded 49 total tackles, three passes defensed and four tackles for loss through eight games played this season. Witherspoon will be counted on to provide physical coverage against Wilson and disrupt his flow throughout the game, but the task will not be easy.
Wilson presents Witherspoon with a difficult assignment this week. Wilson is a former 1,000-yard receiver from last season who has recorded 486 receiving yards this year, putting him on pace to record approximately 1,032.7 yards if he plays all 17 games this year. His combination of size, athleticism and route-running ability makes him a dynamic receiver who may create problems for Witherspoon in the game.
The matchup is likely to provide a compelling individual battle between both star performers, particularly with Gardner Minshew expected to start at quarterback for Arizona following the Cardinals’ decision to trade Jacoby Brissett to the Baltimore Ravens. Witherspoon will have an opportunity to make a significant impact in the game by limiting Wilson and helping Seattle’s defense impose its will in the divisional matchup.
