1980 F1 champion Alan Jones has died at the age of 80, his wife announced on Thursday.

Jones was a key figure in Williams' rise to prominence in the late 70s and early 80s, finishing third in the championship in 1979 before taking the team's first championship – ahead of Nelson Piquet and team-mate Carlos Reutemann – the following season.

That 1980 triumph is still the most recent championship win by an Australian, and made him only the man from Down Under to win the F1 drivers' title after the legendary Jack Brabham.

Jones announced that he would retire from the sport after the 1981 season, in which he finished just four points from a second consecutive championship, although he did return for a single race with Arrows in 1983, and just over a season with Team Haas (no relation to the current Haas team) in 1985 and '86 before leaving the sport for good.

Family statement on Alan Jones' passing

His wife Amanda Butler-Davis released a statement announcing his passing on Thursday via Motorsport Australia, writing: “We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Alan, who passed away on 5 November following a short illness.

“He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by those closest to him, as well as the many fans whose support he was always grateful for. Alan dedicated his life to motorsport, building a legacy that will live on through the countless people he touched along the way.

“Through his achievements, passion and unmistakable character, both on and off the track, Alan left an enduring mark on the sport both nationally and across the globe.

“As a family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was part of Alan’s journey for the many years of friendship, love and support. He was incredibly fortunate to have so many wonderful people around him.”

Jones is survived by his wife, Amanda, and his children, Christian, Amber, Zara, Jack, Camilla and Emma.

GPFans' thoughts are with the Jones family and their friends at this time.
