Matheus Cunha was the match-winner for Manchester United against Roma on Tuesday. The Brazilian scored a brace to help spearhead a sensational second-half comeback for the Reds, as they came from 2-0 down to beat the Italian side 3-2 on a historic night at Old Trafford.

Roma had got off to a flying start and went ahead through Matias Soule's 11th-minute strike. Donyell Malen then put Gian Piero Gasperini's side two-nil in front six minutes later, slotting home from the spot after Ayden Heaven handled the ball in the box.

Although United didn't provide an immediate response, they were much improved after half-time and pulled one back with Bruno Fernandes converting a penalty in the 57th minute.

That sparked life into the United faithful, but it took until the 82nd minute for the Reds to equalise. Cunha pounced on a defensive error from Roma before slamming the ball home from close range.

Cunha then scored his second and United's third two minutes later to complete the comeback. He got on the end of a terrific pass from Shea Lacey before drilling the ball in off the post.

Despite receiving a late red card for two quick-fire bookable offences - one of which was for jumping into the crowd to celebrate his winning goal - Cunha was United's standout performer.

The Brazilian has saved Michael Carrick, there is no doubt about that, and the United head coach should repay him with a consistent run in the side and be the club's first-choice left-winger.

Cunha Should Now Be A Starter

Cunha ended his six-match goal drought with the brace against Roma, and it felt much-needed for the forward, who had faced some criticism from the United fans during his barren run.

But what Cunha has got is a natural goalscoring instinct that United do lack when he is not on the pitch. When he is confident, he is United's most dangerous attacker.

He showed what he is all about against Roma and can be lethal when given a chance inside the box. The ex-Wolves man, who joined United in a £62.5m deal, had four shots and scored two of them, with both excellent finishes in their own right, having kept his composure from close range and hammered one in from a tight angle.

As well as that, Cunha won United's penalty which sparked the comeback. He was fouled inside the box before Fernandes stepped up to convert at the second attempt.

Premier League Era Before or After

Did it happen before or after?

Round 1 of 9

Without Cunha, United would not have won the game and Carrick could well have been sacked, with Fabian Hurzeler not wanting the Man Utd job if that were to happen. The Reds were without a win in NINE going into the match against Roma and the pressure had been rising on the United boss. But Cunha's late double has appeared to have saved him.

Due to that and Cunha's impressive second-half performance, Carrick should give him a longer run in the team now and use him as his starting left-winger, even when Marcus Rashford is back.

Matheus Cunha stats vs Man Utd squad

Rashford has flattered to deceive since returning from his loan at Barcelona and Cunha has been in better form this season, despite his recent dip.

Cunha had started the opening six Premier League matches this season before dropping to the bench for the trip to Leeds United. He had been in and out of the side up until returning for the game against Chelsea on Saturday and then on Tuesday at home to Roma.

Four goals across all competitions for Cunha is United's joint-most alongside Bryan Mbeumo and more could follow if he produces the same level of performance as he did against Roma.

It wouldn't be a surprise if he follows that up against Aston Villa on Sunday, with United desperate for a result in the Premier League.
