India Beat Japan 4-1 To Win Record Sixth Asian Champions Trophy Title

India produced a superb second-half performance to defeat Japan 4-1 in the final of the 2026 Asian Champions Trophy, securing a record-extending sixth title. The Indian men's hockey team recovered from an early setback to dominate the closing stages and complete a memorable championship victory.

Japan took an unexpected lead in the third minute through Kazumasa Matsumoto, who found the net with a powerful reverse-hit shot. The early goal put India under pressure, forcing the hosts to chase the game against a disciplined Japanese defence.

Despite creating opportunities and enjoying periods of possession, India struggled to convert their attacks into goals during the opening half. Japan went into the break with a narrow 1-0 advantage.

Shilanand Lakra Brings India Back Into the Contest

India's breakthrough arrived in the 42nd minute through Shilanand Lakra. After a series of penalty-corner attempts, Aditya Lalage delivered a reverse-pass that found Lakra in a dangerous position. The forward made no mistake from close range to restore parity.

Japan challenged the goal, arguing that the pass involved dangerous play, but the video umpire upheld the decision. The equaliser changed the momentum of the contest, giving India the confidence to push forward.

Three Goals in Six Minutes Seal India's Victory

The final quarter proved decisive as India turned their comeback into a commanding win. Dilpreet Singh put India ahead in the 48th minute after receiving an excellent pass from Hardik Singh. The goal gave the hosts the advantage they had been searching for throughout the match.

Five minutes later, Jugraj Singh extended India's lead with a powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner. Japan were struggling to contain India's attacking pressure, and Vivek Sagar Prasad added another goal in the 54th minute, converting a rebound with a superb half-volley.

India maintained their 4-1 advantage until the final whistle, completing an impressive turnaround after conceding so early.

India Extend Their Asian Champions Trophy Record

The triumph marked India's sixth Asian Champions Trophy crown, extending their position as the competition's most successful team. Previous victories came in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. The latest success also completed a hat-trick of consecutive titles, following their triumphs in the 2023 and 2024 editions.

Hardik Singh Reaches 200 International Appearances

The final was also a landmark occasion for vice-captain Hardik Singh, who made his 200th international appearance for India. His influence in midfield and contribution to Dilpreet Singh's goal added another highlight to an already memorable evening.

The victory was more than another trophy. Recovering from a difficult opening quarter and scoring four unanswered goals demonstrated the team's attacking depth, resilience and ability to deliver when the championship was on the line.
