FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard praises impact of changes after Coventry City's win against Sunderland

FRANK Lampard praised the impact of the players he brought into the side following Coventry City’s 3-1 home win against Sunderland.

Frank Lampard.

Lampard brought Stephen Mfuni, Victor Torp, Yann Gboho and Taiwo Awoniyi into the starting XI for the game against the Black Cats at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

And all four players made in impact with Awoniyi on the scoresheet while Victor Torp provided the assist for Jack Rudoni’s goal after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring.

The result lifts Coventry out of the relegation zone and up to 16th in the Premier League table, two points clear of the relegation zone.

And Lampard stressed the need for all of his players to make an impact when given an opportunity on the pitch.

Lampard said: “It’s a big result and a very good performance.

“We started the game well and had a good energy and variation about us, the goals showed that.

“There was some really good play which we had to sustain in the second half and you have to get so many bits right to win games in this league.

“If we’re going to succeed this year, players will be disappointed when they don’t play, players who are not playing have to train to get into the team.

“The players that came in showed the impact. If we’re going to succeed, it has to be everybody.

“It’s a good feeling when you make those changes and players show how positive they can be, everyone needs to keep working.”

Goals from Sakamoto and Awoniyi put the Sky Blues in command before Rudoni sealed the points after the break.

And Lampard singled out Rudoni for praise after the midfielder scored his third goal of the campaign against the Black Cats.

Lampard added: “It’s trying to convey to the players that there’s a level that’s the Premier League and there’s all these demands.

“But you also have to believe you’re there and you can offer [something].

“We’re the team with the least experience in the league. Our story is different to everybody else but we’re going along okay.

“Rudi is a good example of someone who is showing he’s a Premier League player, it’s coming out in these performances because he’s got big talent and he’s owning it.

“When Rudi’s like that and at his best, you can afford him the freedom to move around because he gives teams problems.”

Coventry are next in action against Everton on Friday, November 6 with kick-off at 8pm at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
