Dover Athletic boss Jake Leberl says there are difficult decisions to make ahead of their FA Cup first-round home tie against National League Wealdstone

Manager Jake Leberl admits there are difficult decisions to make ahead of Dover’s huge FA Cup clash this Saturday.

Whites will aim to progress into the second round - one tie away from a potential match against Premier League clubs, such as champions Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City - when they welcome Wealdstone to Crabble.

The National League side, who enjoyed a last-gasp 3-2 win against Southend United last weekend, will be favourites.

“We will do our homework on them and pick a team that we feel is most suitable to conquer them,” said Leberl.

“Generally we like to stick to a winning side, but I think Saturday proved we do have strength in depth. Corie has been training so well.

“He’s come on and been unfortunate not to start, but he got his opportunity and I felt he did well.

“There is food for thought and there’s going to be difficult decisions, which is not what you want, but it’s really good for the club. Baps came on and his attitude was absolutely brilliant.

“We’re in a really good place, and long may that continue.”

It’s the first time Dover have reached the FA Cup first round in seven years.

Leberl said: “We’re really excited. We haven’t been in the first round for a long time.

“Wealdstone won on Saturday, they scored late on, and are doing reasonably well. We know it’s going to be a really difficult game. But we also know that, so far this season, we have been a match for anyone.

“There’s no reason why we cannot get a result.

“There’s a good vibe. Saturday’s crowd, again, was a little bit disappointing (675 watched the game). But hopefully they’re saving their pennies for the games that are coming up because I appreciate we have a lot of home games on the trot.

“I thought the crowd were better on Saturday than they were [last] Tuesday night (a 1-0 loss to unbeaten Chelmsford City) but, obviously, Tuesday nights are always difficult.

“We look forward to this place being packed, as noisy as they can make it, and hopefully they get us over the line.”

Wealdstone, whose squad includes ex-Gillingham striker Luke Norris, sit just above the relegation zone and Leberl is hoping his side can make home advantage count.

“The key was a home draw,” said Leberl, who was Chris Kinnear’s No.2 when Dover played Crystal Palace in the FA Cup third round in January 2015.

“I’m sure this place will get packed.

“I’m sure that it’ll be a really good atmosphere. There is loads to play for, it’s huge financially for the club, and the boys want to progress.

“We want an even better FA Cup run this year rather than just the first round.”

The fixture will be a third in a row for Whites at home. They then travel to Walton & Hersham on Tuesday night before an FA Trophy tie at home to Isthmian Premier Burgess Hill next weekend.

On his message to their supporters, Leberl, whose team have already seen off Dorking Wanderers (3-2), Hanwell Town (2-1) and Folkestone (4-2) to reach this stage, said: “The message would be ‘Come every week!’. But, obviously, they have all got their own reasons why they cannot do that, especially in the world we live in now where money is so tight.

“We appreciate them. The last round against Dorking, I felt they made a huge difference.

“Hopefully, they will be out in their numbers, it’s a nice day and we can put on a performance for them.”

The clash against Wealdstone will see Whites winger Sak Hassan up against his former team. Hassan, 25, scored three goals and registered nine assists at Grosvenor Vale last term but upset the club after he appeared in the televised Baller League six-a-side tournament without permission.

But he is now with Dover and opened his club account against Farnham.

Leberl said: “He’s a really good signing. He’s a great lad and works so hard.

“He was there, defending in the last minute - which, obviously, he knows he has got to do - so fair play to him.”

Right-back Roman Charles-Cook is available despite his red card against Chelmsford.

The Grenada international was sent off in the first half of the 1-0 home loss for handling a goal-bound shot, but the club’s appeal was successful.
