Liverpool has not closed off the possibility of a new contract for Alexis Mac Allister, according to reports, while the star's deal continues to dwindle towards an end.
The 27-year-old has entered the final two years of his stay at Anfield, based on his current contract, which has led to plenty of uncertainty surrounding the midfielder's long-term future at the club.
Mac Allister revealed earlier this season that he had received communication from the Reds that there would be no extension on the cards at the time, which led to some frustration from the Argentinian international, considering the new contracts for Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in the past year.
The Liverpool ace went public with his frustrations in the team's pre-match press conference before facing Atletico Madrid, where he highlighted the "sadness" he had felt from the lack of an offer. Despite that, he made it clear that his focus remained on giving his all for the Reds for however long he is with the team.
Since that initial press conference, the midfielder has got to work, showing a clear uptick in form this campaign compared to the last to make himself an important part of Andoni Iraola's setup.
While he has popped up with some important goals along the way, Mac Allister once again took to the public domain to vent his frustrations over the contract situation he finds himself in. Speaking to Gaston Edul, he claimed: "First of all, obviously, I feel that affection from the fans, and that’s something incredible for me. It’s not easy at a club like Liverpool to be appreciated the way I am. I enjoy it a lot, and obviously winning a Premier League title with this club is something very special, something the fans don’t forget.
“Obviously, we’re in a situation where I have a year and a half left on my contract, and last season I was told that the club’s idea was not to renew it, at least for now. And obviously, that was a painful, unpleasant situation."
The star certainly made it clear that his preference was to stay at Anfield; however, as he added: "The reality is that the manager has now changed, the sporting director has changed, and new investors are coming into the club. So I think I’m now in a position where anything can happen. We’ll see what happens in the future. I’ve always said that I’m very happy here, that I really enjoy it, and we’ll see.”
While the contract situation continues to move towards the expiration date of summer 2028, it seems as though Liverpool hasn't set a guaranteed stance on Mac Allister's future, and things could yet change.
The Athletic claims that the Reds haven't closed the door on the prospect of a new deal for the midfielder, who will be hoping that his performances this season can be enough to turn the tide and force the hand of the hierarchy to put a new contract on the table.
There is, however, no hurry for the club to do so any time soon. That may be helped by the fact that Mac Allister has clearly shown that he wants to stay at Liverpool, instead of manufacturing a move elsewhere.
Should that change, then the situation could also move quickly. The World Cup winner was linked with interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City in the summer, suggesting that there are plenty of suitors available for a deal, though he hasn't seemingly entertained that prospect yet.
With Mac Allister making it very clear once again that he would like to stay, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will act or whether the original stance from the previous recruitment team will stand firm.
Time is on the Reds' side, for now. But at some point, a definitive decision will have to be made, one way or the other.
