Jacob Murphy comes out swinging for his Newcastle United critics - fans won't like this

Fulham 1-1 Newcastle United: Jacob Murphy scored a stunning goal against Fulham at Craven Cottage as the Magpies settled for a point.

Jacob Murphy hit back at his Newcastle United critics following his first goal of the season against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

The 31-year-old unleashed a ferocious 25-yard strike to give the Magpies the lead in the closing stages at Craven Cottage before Rodrigo Muniz made it 1-1 a few minutes later.

But Murphy felt he should have come away from the match with a goal and an two assists having set up Dan Burn’s disallowed strike and Harvey Barnes’ saved effort in the first half.

Explaining his role in the side, Murphy told reporters: “[To] add value whenever I can. I had a specific role today which I thought I carried out very well, which helped give solidity to the team and give us good structure.

“Another day I walk away with two assists and a goal.”

Jacob Murphy hits back

Murphy is Newcastle’s longest-serving player but has been subject to criticism from supporters since the club’s downturn in form over the past year or so.

In response to his critics, Murphy said: “I think for some people, my playing style might not be for them, but I know what I bring and it's effective, believe me.”

Yet even Murphy’s goal at Fulham didn’t see him avoid criticism with his subsequent celebration, in which he cupped his ear while making his way to the travelling supporters, deemed deliberately provocotive by some.

“I think that would be a good one for the goal catalogue,” Murphy added. “But yes, it was good to see it go in. And yes, I think at that point we were thinking that we might have been walking away with three points there, which we were disappointed that we didn't.

“I think we created some really good chances and I think that was a strong showing from us. So, yes, disappointed that we didn't walk away with three points, but it was a point in the right direction.”

Newcastle now head into a two week international break before hosting Premier League Arsenal at St James’ Park on November 21 (5:30pm kick-off).
