Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has voiced his frustration at the penalty his team conceded late in its Premier League victory over Crystal Palace.
Despite a nervy start to proceedings at Selhurst Park, in which the visitors had a goal ruled out for offside, the Reds soon took control of the game. Alisson played his part with some crucial saves, but Alexis Mac Allister continued his strong start to the season with a crucial opening goal.
Florian Wirtz added a second after the break before Alexander Isak rounded things off with a third. Liverpool appeared to be cruising but lost its clean sheet in the closing stages of the game as Milos Kerkez conceded a penalty.
The left back went for a header in the box and collided with Dario Osorio. Eddie Nketiah made no mistake from the spot to score a mere consolation for Palace.
Despite his team's comfortable victory, the decision left Iraola reeling at full-time, especially as clean sheets are hard to come by in the Premier League. "I am very upset because the ones in our box they are calling penalties and in the other box they are now," Iraola explained.
"I know we are 3-0 and it's the 95th minute but I'm very upset. It's a head to head but even then it's Osario to Milos [Kerkez]. It's a clash of heads.
"You can say it's 3-0 but, for me, there is more because it is not the first time this season and you compare... I'm really upset. The VAR took a lot of time.
"When you call a penalty and they are two minutes. Two repetitions, three repetitions, they are finding a way not to be called by the VAR. A clean sheet is not cheap in the Premier League and we wanted to win 3-0. It is not just because of this penalty, it's because of a lot of things."
Liverpool has been on the receiving end of some controversial refereeing and VAR decisions this season, notably in the defeat against Manchester City after the last international break. The Reds were also denied a penalty when they were beaten by league leaders Arsenal last weekend.
Still, Iraola will no doubt be relieved his team got back to winning ways following those back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Fenerbahce. Liverpool has moved into the top four after Chelsea was narrowly defeated by Sunderland on Sunday.
The final international break of the year will get underway next week, and Liverpool returns to action later this month with the visit of Manchester United to Anfield. Then, the Reds have two tricky away games against Club Brugge and Everton before the busy December period gets underway.
