Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United has been thrown into serious doubt following Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.

The former midfielder is under enormous pressure after overseeing just two victories in United’s opening 11 competitive matches this season.

Wednesday’s embarrassment extended their winless run to seven games, with Cesc Fabregas’ side exposing United’s defensive weaknesses throughout the encounter.

Como completed 594 passes, the most by any team against United in a Champions League match since Barcelona in 2019.

Captain Bruno Fernandes subsequently questioned Carrick’s tactical approach, suggesting United should have pressed their opponents more aggressively.

Jamie Carragher condemned the captain’s comments, describing his public criticism as a disgrace while warning that Carrick’s tenure could be approaching its conclusion.

Earlier today, United were reported to have begun identifying potential managerial replacements, with several candidates under consideration.

The situation has now prompted another significant development concerning Carrick’s immediate future.

Sky Sports confirm Michael Carrick decision

According to journalist Rob Dorsett via Sky Sports, Carrick will remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

However, the fixture is considered pivotal, with growing concern among United’s hierarchy about the team’s performances.

No decision has been made regarding Carrick’s position beyond Sunday, despite the renewed doubts created by the Como defeat.

Club officials recognise the injury problems affecting United but believe the current squad should be performing considerably better.

Although several managerial candidates were interviewed in January, Sky Sports understands no recent formal approaches have been made.

Interestingly, Michael Carrick also oversaw United’s controversial 2-2 draw against Bournemouth back in March, when defensive problems and refereeing decisions dominated the aftermath.

Sunday now represents an opportunity to halt United’s alarming decline, although another failure could leave the hierarchy facing an increasingly difficult decision.
