Five takeaways from FSU’s season-opening win over Florida A&M

Florida State opened the 2026-27 season with an impressive 112-69 win over Florida A&M, improving to 6-0 all-time against the Rattlers. The contest offered an encouraging first look at what Luke Loucks’ second team could become Monday night.

The game was never seriously in doubt, and the bigger story was how different FSU looked from a year ago. The Seminoles played faster, rebounded better, pressured the ball, and showed off the size and versatility Loucks spent the offseason talking about.

Here are five takeaways from the win.

FSU’s defensive pressure stood out immediately

Florida State consistently picked up full court, used aggressive hands, and made FAMU uncomfortable from the start. The Seminoles also flashed creative looks defensively, including a zone on a sideline out-of-bounds play that helped create an and-one opportunity for Kam Taylor.

The length across the floor was obvious and should be one of FSU’s biggest advantages this season.

Marcis Ponder already looks physically different

Ponder continues to look like a veteran despite being a freshman.

The 7-footer controlled the paint, rebounded, and moved extremely well for his size. The broadcast even noted that NBA scouts in attendance were intrigued by his mobility.

Ponder has already said he wants to become the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and it is easy to see why Loucks has such high expectations for him. He finished with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Sebastian Rancik looked as good as advertised

Rancik may have been the most impressive offensive player on the floor.

The Colorado transfer scored a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting and showed exactly why Loucks praised him throughout the offseason. He finished through traffic, knocked down shots from the perimeter and moved well defensively.

At 6-foot-11, he gives FSU another difficult matchup problem.

FSU looks much improved on the glass

Rebounding was a major issue last season, but Florida State looked noticeably stronger in that area against FAMU, out-rebounding the Rattlers 45-26.

Ponder’s presence helps, but the improvement goes beyond one player. The Seminoles have more size across the roster and appear far better equipped to finish defensive possessions.

That should be especially important once ACC play begins.

Loucks and Charlie Ward added another layer to the opener

The matchup featured plenty of Florida State connections.

Loucks faced FSU legend Charlie Ward, now the head coach at Florida A&M. FSU guard Anthony Robinson II also previously played for Ward at Florida State University School.

FSU played fast in transition, spread the floor and showed enough shooting and athleticism to suggest this roster has considerably more versatility than last season’s group. For Loucks, that may have been the most encouraging part of opening night.

The Seminoles did not simply beat a nearby opponent. It looked like a team with a clearer identity, more size, and substantially more ways to create problems than it had a year ago.
