Manchester City star attracts renewed interest from Manchester United

Manchester United are considering a January move for a Manchester City star after previously failing to secure his signature.

Manchester City star attracts renewed interest from Manchester United

Manchester United could be preparing another extraordinary transfer approach to their fiercest rivals as Michael Carrick looks to rescue a disastrous season.

The rivalry between United and Manchester City has produced decades of hostility, making direct transfers between the clubs exceptionally rare.

Carlos Tevez’s controversial switch in 2009 remains one of the most notorious examples, with supporters on both sides fiercely protective of their players.

However, the clubs have also developed contrasting approaches to recruitment, particularly when pursuing expensive targets.

City have repeatedly demonstrated their financial muscle, spending nearly £830 million across three years before their latest summer rebuild.

United, meanwhile, have become increasingly reluctant to enter expensive bidding wars, despite spending heavily themselves in recent seasons.

That difference became particularly evident during the pursuit of Elliot Anderson.

United explored signing the Nottingham Forest midfielder and even discussed the possibility of him eventually becoming club captain.

However, City secured his signature for £116 million in July, a British-player transfer record at the time, leaving United empty-handed.

Their recruitment frustrations have since become increasingly apparent.

Despite obvious defensive weaknesses, United failed to sign a left-back before the summer deadline.

Luke Shaw’s fitness concerns, Patrick Dorgu’s injury problems and his defensive limitations have complicated Carrick’s options.

Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot and Ayden Heaven have consequently been among those deployed on the left, highlighting the absence of a dependable specialist alternative.

United’s struggles have contributed to a dreadful start, with just seven points from seven Premier League matches and Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.

Manchester United renew interest in Manchester City star

According to Africafoot, Manchester United are considering a January loan move for Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The Algeria international was already the subject of a surprise deadline-day enquiry in September.

However, negotiations collapsed after City reportedly insisted on an obligation to purchase, while United wanted a temporary arrangement.

Ait-Nouri joined City from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2025 but has struggled for opportunities this season.

He has yet to feature in the Premier League during the current campaign, making just three appearances across other competitions and registering three assists.

His attacking qualities are well established. During his final season at Wolves, he registered four league goals and seven assists, completing 63 dribbles.

Former Wolves coach Edu Rubio has praised his close control, progressive running and ability to defend one-on-one, although his decision-making remains an area for improvement.

For United, his ability to advance possession and operate across the left flank could offer Carrick a valuable alternative.

Nevertheless, City’s willingness to sanction another deal remains uncertain, with the financial structure likely to determine whether negotiations progress.
