The Hoops manager attended the gathering to hear first-hand the concerns of fans amid growing discontent over the running of the club and recent results.

O’Neill revealed he only became aware of the meeting at the “11th hour”, but was determined to attend and get a better understanding of the mood among supporters.

“I just wanted to go down to it and essentially experience what the supporters are feeling and see how we can do something about it,” he said.

Asked about the main grievances raised during the meeting, O’Neill suggested there was little unexpected about the issues put to those representing Celtic.

“I think it's straightforward,” he said. “I think you would know what they would be.

“I think they were fair, absolutely. And I think that the board as a whole tried to answer them as honestly as they possibly could.”

O’Neill also insisted the strength of feeling expressed by supporters did not come as a surprise.

“No, I don't think anything really surprised me at all,” he said.

“I think that the questions that they were asking, I think that the board would have been expecting those questions to be asked and obviously hoping to answer them in the best possible manner, or as honestly as they could.”

The Celtic boss revealed it was not the first time he had attended such an event, having gone along to a similar gathering several months ago, and stressed he would be prepared to meet supporters again if his schedule permits.

However, O’Neill dismissed the suggestion that attending the Greenock meeting alongside club representatives could be viewed as an attempt to shore up his own position.

“My job doesn't depend on going to meetings like that,” he said. “My job depends on results. It really does, and I cannot forget that.

“If I am the manager and the next meeting comes up and time allows, I don't mind going to it.”
