The New Jersey Devils trade goaltender Rémi Poirier to the Washington Capitals on Sunday for Washington’s own seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, the team announced. General manager Sunny Mehta made the deal.

Poirier, 25, joined the Devils off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Sept. 27 and did not appear in a game for New Jersey. Dallas drafted him in the sixth round in 2020, 185th overall. Last season he went 27-19-6 with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 52 games for the Texas Stars of the AHL. He has not played in an NHL regular-season game.

He was in the final year of a two-year contract that pays $850,000 in the NHL and $135,000 in the minors this season. It was set to expire after 2026-27, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent.

The trade leaves Connor Hellebuyck and Jake Allen as the two goaltenders on the Devils’ NHL roster. Hellebuyck, acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 23, is 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. Allen is 5-3 with a 3.11 average and a .887 save percentage. David Rittich and Jakub Malek are the Devils’ other goaltenders under contract.

The Devils are comfortable with Rittich in a recall situation should New Jersey find themselves in need of reinforcements in goal.

New Jersey now holds five picks in the 2027 draft: two in the first round, its own second and fifth, and the Washington seventh. The Devils had sent a 2027 seventh-round pick to Winnipeg in the Hellebuyck trade.

Poirier’s $850,000 counted against the Devils’ salary cap. The move takes the Devils from 43 to 42 players on standard contracts and raises their cap space from $124,340 to about $974,339.

The Devils, 9-5-0, return to action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET when the Edmonton Oilers visit Prudential Center.
