Rodney Hood joins Duke men's basketball staff

The Duke Brotherhood is known for producing some of the NBA's best talent. However, it's also produced some incredible coaches like Jon Scheyer, Quin Snyder, JJ Redick and Amile Jefferson, to name a few. As the 2026-27 season began Monday night, Scheyer's staff included a familiar face on the sidelines, former Duke forward and eight-year NBA veteran Rodney Hood.

Following Duke's blowout against Army, Scheyer spoke about Hood joining his staff.

"You know, my first year back (as a Duke assistant under Mike Krzyzewski), I was able to coach Rodney," he said. "And obviously, he was a great player here, a great pro player. But he's back in a coaching intern role and just taking that next step in his life and his journey."

During his lone season with the Blue Devils, Hood averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.7 steals. He went on to be the No. 23 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Still only 34 years old, Hood played 448 games in the NBA for six different teams, averaging 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.7 steals.

Now, looking to test the waters of coaching, Hood will be able to learn from an experienced staff while providing student athletes with the wisdom he learned throughout his playing career.
