Liam Lawson’s future in Formula 1 has taken another turn, and it is not a good one for the New Zealander.
Lawson is sitting ninth in the standings with 83 points, making him the best driver outside the top four teams. His last performance in Mexico – going from the pit lane to finish P7 – highlights just how impressive he has been in 2026.
But despite all of this, the Kiwi driver still has no update on his future. His contract expires in 2026, and Racing Bulls are deciding between Lawson and Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov for 2027.

If you were Liam Lawson, what would YOU do for 2027? Prioritise Racing Bulls, or look for another seat?
However, according to David Croft, it is now ‘more and more likely’ that Lawson will lose his seat to Tsolov, who is currently fighting for the Formula 2 title.
According to a report from Blick, Racing Bulls want to ‘get rid’ of Lawson, despite his impressive form in 2026. The reason is because he is ‘said not to have performed to his full potential in previous years’.
In 2025, Lawson was dropped by Red Bull after just two races. Christian Horner trusted him to replace Sergio Perez, but he could not get to grips with the car, getting knocked out in Q1 and failing to score a point in Australia and China.
He was sent back to Racing Bulls, where the New Zealander did recover his form, scoring 38 points. He has continued that momentum in 2026, but despite this, the team look set to drop him for Tsolov.
