Manchester City suffered its third Premier League defeat, falling 3-1 to Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Saturday, as reported by NOS. The result extends Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points after the Gunners secured a 1-0 win over Hull City.
The match began with a moment of reflection, as all English stadiums observed “The Last Post” in remembrance of war victims, with players wearing the poppy symbol. Nottingham Forest made a blistering start, scoring after amper six minutes. Defender Jair Cunha put Forest ahead in the sixth minute, dispossessing Josko Gvardiol and slotting the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goal ignited the home crowd, ending a 167-day goal drought for Forest in their own stadium, dating back to the final match of last season.
Ten minutes later, Forest doubled their lead through striker Liam Delap. The former City academy product, who joined the club on loan, received the ball from Elliot Anderson and unleashed a powerful strike from distance, leaving Donnarumma helpless.
Manchester City, which had won its first seven league games of the season, responded after halftime. Substitute Rayan Cherki pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute, taking a pass from Jérémie Doku and firing a first-time shot into the top corner of the net. The goal briefly reignited City’s hopes, but Forest’s resilient defending held firm.
Forest sealed the victory with a third goal in the 73rd minute. Delap completed his brace, collecting the ball on a counterattack and finishing with a left-footed strike that cannoned in off the inside of the post. The goal came after Forest captain Ryan Yates had struck the crossbar just minutes earlier.
Earlier on Saturday, Arsenal maintained its position at the summit of the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 victory over Hull City. The Gunners, with defender Jurriën Timber in the starting lineup, dominated possession but found it difficult to break down the visitors’ defense. Arsenal’s goal came from captain Martin Ødegaard, who tapped in a rebound following a strong run by Noni Madueke. The goal came after Kai Havertz had a penalty appeal waved away for offside, as noted by NOS.
The result leaves Arsenal with 27 points from 10 matches. Manchester City, with the defeat, now has 21 points. Brighton & Hove Albion can move into second place, leapfrogging City, if it defeats Brentford on Sunday.
