Kylian Mbappé scored late to help Real Madrid secure a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, moving the club level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the group standings with nine points. Eurosport reported that the win, secured largely through a dominant second-half performance at home, leaves the Spanish giants in strong form ahead of Sunday’s upcoming Clasico.
Despite the eventual three-goal margin, the opening 45 minutes drew whistles from home supporters as Real Madrid failed to register a sustained press or cohesive attacking structure. RB Leipzig created several clear chances during that scoreless stretch. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save in the 28th minute to deny Romulo Cardoso’s powerful volley, before stopping a one-on-one effort from Christopher Nkunku in the 41st minute. Just before halftime, the hosts capitalized on a scramble when Bernardo Silva reacted quickest to poke in a deflected shot from Arda Güler past a sliding Maarten Vandevoordt for a 1-0 lead.
The match shifted dramatically after the interval as Real Madrid increased its passing combinations and attacking tempo. In the 52nd minute, Vinicius Junior combined with Jude Bellingham, whose cross set up an opportunity that Güler ultimately bundled across the line from close range. RB Leipzig applied pressure later in the half, but Kylian Mbappé extended the lead to 3-1 in the 83rd minute with a curling strike from 18 meters out. After Gomis pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 85th minute, substitute Yan Diomandé capped the scoring two minutes later with a soaring volley that found the top corner of Vandevoordt’s net.
The victory lifts Real Madrid to four consecutive wins across all competitions, bringing them to nine points in the Champions League table alongside Paris Saint-Germain, while RB Leipzig sits 29th.
