Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are the two most experienced drivers in F1 history, and this is how their career earnings stack up against one another from the beginning of 2007.

With both drivers still racing at the pinnacle of single-seater motorsport well into their 40s, it’s no surprise at all to find out that they have earned a pretty penny over the course of their respective glittering careers.

Should Lewis Hamilton REGRET leaving Mercedes after Kimi Antonelli's title win?

Lewis Hamilton began his career alongside Fernando Alonso at McLaren in 2007, with the Spaniard’s contract that year dwarfing that of his rookie teammate. However, as the years have gone by, the landscape has shifted quite dramatically.

How much money Lewis Hamilton has earned in F1 compared to Fernando Alonso in the same period

Given Hamilton’s success, it is fairly natural for him to be on a more lucrative contract than his formerly fierce rival.

For example, the Spaniard’s latest contract extension at Aston Martin has been suggested to be the most lucrative of Alonso’s career so far, but it still remains around £23m less than what Hamilton is currently earning at Ferrari.

Over the course of their careers since the Briton’s rookie campaign in 2007, there is also a massive difference, according to data from Spotrac.

Since he was inserted alongside Alonso at McLaren that year, Hamilton is believed to have earned around £541m, which includes his base salary as well as any incentives that may have been claimed through his exploits on track.

Alonso, on the other hand, has earned somewhere in the region of £396m in the same period. Of course, the two-time world champion took a brief hiatus from F1 at the end of 2018 and returned in 2021, but has been reported to have earned around £5.9m through his various racing duties in that period.

Going off Spotrac’s figures, Hamilton has earned around £145m more than Alonso in the same period as he rose from being a rookie to one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen.

The most lucrative season from Hamilton’s glittering 20-year career came in 2020 – the year he equalled Michael Schumacher and became seven-time world champion. The Briton earned a reported £56m that year, which includes any bonuses from his historic campaign.

He should be set to net another figure in that ballpark next year, too, which currently stands as his final year at Maranello unless he receives an extension to his existing contract for 2027.
