Kimi Antonelli stands on the verge of Formula 1 history in Mexico City, where the Mercedes driver aims to secure the Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship. The 20-year-old Bologna native enters the 19th round of the season with 365 points in the standings, positioning him to claim Italy’s first drivers’ title in 73 years since Alberto Ascari last triumphed in 1953.
Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for Ferrari with a lap time of 1:16.514 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, edging teammate George Russell by just 0.009 seconds. Charles Leclerc qualified third for Scuderia Ferrari, while Antonelli initially posted the fifth-fastest time in Q3. A subsequent grid penalty assessed to Max Verstappen for a practice-session contact with Liam Lawson elevated Antonelli to fourth on the starting grid, placing the championship leader squarely on the second row alongside Leclerc.
The mathematical path to the 2026 crown requires minimal output from the Mercedes driver during Sunday’s 71-lap grand prix. If George Russell wins the race, Antonelli needs only a ninth-place finish to collect two points and seal the title. Should Lewis Hamilton take victory, Antonelli must finish tenth for a single point. If neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the grand prix, Antonelli clinches the championship outright regardless of his own finishing position.
Antonelli returned to the cockpit after missing Thursday’s mandatory media obligations due to a viral infection and high fever, receiving clearance from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile to rest in his hotel before the weekend sessions. The Mercedes driver immediately showed strong pace in Friday practice, logging the second-fastest time in the opening session behind Charles Leclerc. During those same practice runs, Antonelli shared the track with fellow Italians Leonardo Fornaroli and debutant Gabriele Minì, marking the first time three Italian drivers participated in an official F1 session since the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix.
Live coverage of the Mexican Grand Prix airs across Sky Sport F1 (channel 207) and streams on NOW, with mobile viewing available via SkyGo. Italian television viewers can also watch free-to-air deferred broadcasts on TV8, which schedules the qualifying session replay at 23:30 on Saturday, October 31, and the full 71-lap race broadcast in the evening on Sunday, November 1.
While Antonelli commands the championship summit with 365 points, the battle for second place remains tightly contested among his pursuers. George Russell leads the chasing group with 242 points, closely followed by Lewis Hamilton with 241 points. Max Verstappen holds 236 points in fourth place, while Charles Leclerc stands fifth with 233 points entering the Mexican round.
