Teenager Rew extends Somerset deal until end of 2029

England teenager Thomas Rew signs a new deal with Somerset to keep him at the club until the end of the 2029 season.

Teenager Thomas Rew has signed a new deal with Somerset to keep him at the club until the end of the 2029 season.

The 18-year-old was last week named captain of England Lions for their upcoming T20 matches against West Indies A - he is thought to be the youngest-ever skipper of the team - days after receiving his first senior England call-up.

The wicketkeeper-batter was also given an England developmental deal and will be part of the squad for their T20 series in Australia in next month.

Rew made his Somerset debut in 2025 and has since played 30 games in all three formats, scoring 990 runs, including his first two centuries this season in the County Championship.

"Thomas has transitioned into the first XI environment extremely well and has quickly shown the qualities that make us excited about his future," said director of cricket Andy Hurry.

"We believe he has the potential to play an important role for Somerset across all formats for many years to come."

Rew plays at Somerset alongside his older brother James and has been part of the club's pathway since the under-11 stage.

His previous deal with the club took him to the end of the 2028 campaign.

He burst onto the scene in June 2025 when he hit the fastest-ever century for England Under-19s and earlier this year captained the side to the Under-19 World Cup final, quickly becoming one of England's brightest young talents.

Hurry said that Rew - who turns 19 next month - has a "strong work ethic".

"What has stood out most is how comfortable and confident he has looked from the outset," he said.

"He has a strong work ethic, a real willingness to learn and improve, and the resilience and determination needed to keep developing his game.

"Those qualities will give him every opportunity to fulfil his potential and make a significant impact for Somerset in the years ahead."

Rew added that it was an "honour" to call Somerset home.

"It's where I've grown up, and every time I walk out in front of those fans it's very special," he said.

"The Somerset badge means a lot to me and to everyone inside that dressing room, so hopefully we can continue to challenge for trophies and bring a few more home."
