Parkinson's gratitude as Wrexham boss hits landmark

Phil Parkinson was appointed as Wrexham manager in the summer of 2021

Phil Parkinson praised the "togetherness" Wrexham have as a club after he became the third-longest serving manager in the top four divisions of English football.

League One club Bromley confirmed the departure of Parkinson's close friend Andy Woodman as boss on Thursday.

It leaves only Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Mansfield Town's Nigel Clough as managers in the Premier League and English Football League to have been in post longer than Parkinson has in north Wales.

On the back of recent reports suggesting Parkinson was under increased pressure at the Racecourse Ground, the Wrexham manager issued his gratitude to those who have helped him succeed at the club - including co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

"My advice to all managers is get good people working with you, and that's key for me - get good staff, good people who are going to support you and be together," he said.

"I'm fortunate here because we've got good staff, we've got great owners, and the togetherness has taken us a long way.

"Everybody wants to beat Wrexham. We know that, and you just can't hide it, and that's going through all the divisions, everywhere we've been.

"We've had that strength of unity throughout the club and that's taken us to one place outside the play-offs last year and hopefully we can go one better this year."

Woodman's departure from Bromley was announced shortly before Parkinson faced the media ahead of his side's Championship contest with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday (15:00 BST).

After learning about Woodman's exit from Copperjax Community Stadium, Parkinson revealed he contacted the 55-year-old prior to Bromley's 4-0 defeat by Leicester City on Tuesday night.

"Andy's a friend of mine, I'm very sorry to hear that because he's done an incredible job at Bromley," added Parkinson.

"I texted him the other night actually before the game to say 'Woody, don't underestimate the achievement that Bromley are facing Leicester City'.

"I honestly didn't know that he'd lost his job, but it's an incredible job he's done there."

Parkinson has been in the Wrexham hot seat for five years and 112 days, 237 days fewer than Clough has been at Mansfield and one year and 191 days fewer than Arteta has been boss at Emirates Stadium.

The experienced manager - who won three successive promotions with Wrexham between 2022-23 and 2024-25 - says he symphatises with bosses who lose their jobs.

"I have empathy and sympathy with managers across the board because there's so many examples going around at the moment that the spotlight always falls on the manager," added Parkinson.

"Sometimes there's other areas of the club where a manager may not be getting help, there's managers who have come into jobs this summer who've lost a lot of key players from clubs who are getting a lot of criticism.

"When you lose, the spotlight comes on the manager and when you win, that praise tends to get spread around everybody.

"Unfortunately that's never going to change, but I've been a manager a long time I understand what other managers are going through."
