Paris Saint-Germain attacker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has undergone successful surgery at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha, Qatar, following a severe right knee injury sustained in UEFA Champions League play, the club announced in a medical statement. The Georgian international suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during PSG’s 4-2 victory over FC Barcelona.
The procedure in Qatar marks the first major milestone in a recovery process expected to sideline the winger for six to nine months, according to early estimates reported by the club. Medical staff confirmed that Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury following a physical challenge involving Barcelona player Xavi Espart during last Tuesday’s European fixture. With recovery timelines for an anterior cruciate ligament tear typically requiring upwards of half a year, according to player entourage statements cited by the AFP, his availability for the remainder of the domestic and continental campaign remains in serious jeopardy.
Prior to the surgical intervention, the Parc des Princes offered a public show of support during PSG’s 2-0 Ligue 1 victory against Olympique Lyonnais. Supporters in the Auteuil stand displayed a large banner reading, “Kvara, the red and blue people are with you.” The gesture acknowledged both his absence from the squad and his ongoing recovery timeline.
The timing of the medical procedure in Doha precluded Kvaratskhelia from traveling to London for the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony. Recognized among the leading contenders for the global honor, the forward finished sixth in the final voting, while the award ultimately went to Harry Kane.
Having successfully completed the surgical procedure in Doha, Kvaratskhelia will immediately begin his rehabilitation program. Paris Saint-Germain has not established a definitive date for his return to competitive action, noting that the player’s progress through the upcoming months of physical therapy will dictate when he can resume training on the pitch.
