The Confédération Africaine de Football executive committee voted unanimously on a Thursday in October 2026 to restore the Africa Cup of Nations to a biennial schedule, reversing a controversial four-year cycle adopted less than a year earlier. The decision, confirmed in an official statement on CAF Online, secures the tournament’s traditional rhythm for member associations and continental players.
The swift about-face follows intense pushback from across the continent after the organization initially announced the switch to a quadrennial format in December 2025. CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe signaled the impending reversal during a strategic conference in Cape Verde in early October 2026, pointing to financial realities and overwhelming feedback from national federations.
The primary catalyst for abandoning the four-year cycle involved the commercial viability of a proposed replacement tournament. According to the governing body’s disclosures, plans for a pan-African Nations League designed to run biennially would require several years to generate the substantial revenues necessary to maintain financial autonomy and global competitiveness for African football.
Additional reporting noted that the initial 2025 reform had sparked an immediate uproar among observers and federations who viewed the longer interval as an undue concession to European clubs and FIFA interests. Acting general secretary Samson Adamu subsequently circulated a formal inquiry to all 54 member associations, confirming widespread support for returning to the two-year rotation.
With the biennial framework reinstated, the continental showcase locks in its host nations and tournament years. The upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations will proceed as planned in 2027 across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, followed by successive editions scheduled for 2028, 2031, and 2033.

Scheduling documents obtained by Al-Botola ahead of the executive meetings also highlighted upcoming continental competitions, including the Women’s Champions League in Egypt and regional beach soccer championships. Furthermore, officials noted that while the tournament remains biennial, future editions may adjust to avoid clashing with the FIFA World Cup, maintaining traditional alignment with international governing body calendars.
While the executive committee has agreed unanimously on the policy shift, the formal ratification is slated for the 48th Ordinary General Assembly on November 21, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, where organizational rights and commercial agreements for the 2028, 2032, and 2036 cycles will be finalized.
Dr. Motsepe emphasized that the restored format protects the interests of all 54 member associations and the diaspora. The upcoming general assembly in Nigeria will close out the administrative review before the formal rollout of the 2027 tournament preparations.
