Skellefteå defeats Björklöven 8-1 in SHL derby

Skellefteå AIK defeated Björklöven 8–1 in a lopsided SHL derby at Visionite Arena in Umeå on Saturday, October 24, 2026, handing the hosts their fourth league defeat in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,400 spectators.

Early Goals Silence a Sold-Out Crowd in Umeå

The highly anticipated match marked the first meeting between the rival clubs in Sweden’s top tier in nearly 38 years, with the previous encounter dating back to November 10, 1988. The sellout crowd in Umeå filled the arena after tickets reportedly sold out in 90 seconds. However, the home supporters faced immediate disappointment when Skellefteå struck just 25 seconds into the opening shift, as Arvid Lundberg netted the game’s first goal. Despite receiving a subsequent power play opportunity, Björklöven failed to convert, allowing Skellefteå’s Rickard Hugg to score shorthanded at 1:32 with an assist from Oscar Lindberg, making it 2–0. Pär Lindholm added a third goal with 1:38 remaining in the first period, sealing a dominant opening frame for the visitors. Skellefteå had entered the derby with a shooting average of 32.5 per match compared to Björklöven’s 21.2. Two goals in 92 seconds decided the start of the game, while an apparent goal by Oskar Vuollet via his skate was disallowed after a video review.

Second Period Extends Skellefteå’s Control

The scoring continued in the middle frame as Skellefteå firmly established control over the contest. Rasmus Bergqvist scored his first SHL goal less than ten minutes into the second period to push the lead to 4–0, while Jonathan Davidsson added a fifth goal before the intermission, assisted by Arvid Lundberg. Television analysts on TV4 described Skellefteå’s top unit as having a field day on the ice, while commentator Johan Edlund remarked during the broadcast that the scoreline was approaching an embarrassing margin for the home side. Mikkel Aagaard later extended the advantage to 6–0 in the third period before Albin Lundin finally put Björklöven on the board, though Skellefteå concluded the match with two more goals to reach the final 8–1 scoreline. Skellefteå accounted for nearly 71 percent of all shots on goal and posted a shooting efficiency of just over 20 percent.

Frustrated Home Side Retires to Locker Room

Following the final horn, Björklöven players and coaching staff expressed sharp disappointment over the comprehensive defeat. Coach Magnus Bogren called the result unacceptable and frustrating, noting that the team was deeply upset not to give their supporters a better Saturday. Björklöven players remained inside their dressing room for 20 minutes after the match before addressing media representatives, with acting captain Axel Ottosson acknowledging the anger and disappointment among the fanbase. Defenseman Marcus Björk told SVT Sport that he felt entirely empty and angry, offering an apology to the supporters who back the team nightly, while teammate Lukas Ekeståhl-Jonsson admitted to SVT Sport that he simply felt ashamed of the performance. Assistant coach Daniel Rahimi stated in the final period that vi blir lite paralyserade och kan inte hantera den här typen av match, while Ekeståhl-Jonsson told TV4 Play during the first intermission, fan vi måste lugna ner oss lite grann och våga spela, det är 40 minuter kvar. Ottosson noted to Sportbladet that det vi sa till varandra stannar där inne så klart, and promised supporters that vi kommer jobba stenhårt så att det aldrig kommer se ut så där igen.

Upcoming Rematch Scheduled in Skellefteå

Björklöven will face Luleå on Thursday, before traveling to face Skellefteå again in a rematch at Skellefteå Kraft Arena on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
