Ignacio Buse defeated Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 20 minutes on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Paris La Défense Arena. The straight-sets victory in the opening round of the Paris Masters marked a turnaround for the Peruvian tennis player, who won 71% of points on his first serve while converting four crucial break points during the indoor hardcourt match. Buse had a chance to close it out at 5-2 but had to wait to seal the win on the indoor courts of the Parisian complex, where the opening day featured a high-intensity duel that drew attention. He also achieved his third victory in Masters 1000 tournaments and secured his first ATP win on indoor hard courts.
The straight-sets win served as direct revenge for Buse, who fell to Bergs 6-0, 6-3 at the Shanghai Masters just 23 days earlier on October 10. This time, Buse dictated the pace from the outset and kept unforced errors to a minimum, displaying great authority and a totally renewed attitude. Bergs received a point penalty during the contest after breaking two racquets in frustration as the Peruvian took command of the court.
Monday’s victory snaps a five-match ATP losing streak for Buse, whose previous tour-level win came at the US Open. Ranked 33rd in the ATP rankings, while Bergs is ranked 40th, Buse is chasing the highest year-end finish for a Peruvian male tennis player since Jaime Yzaga finished 23rd in 1989 and 31st in both 1993 and 1994, with Pablo Arraya finishing 36th in 1982 and Luis Horna reaching 38th in 2004. A victory in his next outing could lift Buse to No. 32 in the world rankings.
This will mark the second time Buse faces a player from the world’s top ten, following his encounter against American player Ben Shelton at the 2025 US Open.
The tournament is broadcast for Peru and the rest of South America through ESPN and Disney+, allowing fans to follow the matches via television and streaming depending on signal availability in each country.
