Conmebol rejects Corinthians’ new documents; Seedorf remains unrecognized as Conmebol coach
Joanna De Assis

Conmebol has rejected the latest documentation submitted by Corinthians in its effort to validate Clarence Seedorf’s coaching license, telling the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) that the additional paperwork cannot count as coaching experience under the agreement between the South American body and UEFA, UOL reported. The decision leaves the Dutchman unable to be officially recognized as Corinthians’ head coach in Conmebol competitions and sets up a race against the calendar for the club, which sits in the relegation zone of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

The rejection came after Corinthians sent a new batch of documents through the CBF in an attempt to overturn an earlier denial. Conmebol consulted UEFA before responding and concluded that the materials — which included letters from the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), AC Milan and the Cameroon national team, according to ESPN Brasil — do not meet the requirement of three years of professional coaching experience needed to recognize Seedorf’s UEFA Pro License in South America.

Why the dispute matters now

The club won its first match under him last Friday, beating Mirassol 2-0 at the Neo Química Arena, and sits in the relegation zone with the league entering its final stretch. Estadão reported that the CBF has granted Seedorf a provisional license that allows him to sit on the club’s bench and conduct press conferences in domestic competition, but that clearance does not extend to Conmebol’s recognition of his credentials.

According to ESPN Brasil, the practical consequence arrives on Nov. 18, when Corinthians plays Botafogo: from that match onward, Seedorf cannot sign the match sheet as head coach. If no resolution is reached, assistant Léo Porto — who holds a CBF license — will be listed as the official head coach on the teamsheet while Seedorf continues to command the team from the bench and handle post-match interviews.

How Seedorf’s experience fell short of the rule

The dispute centers on a single requirement: Conmebol demands 36 months of work in front of professional teams to recognize a UEFA Pro License under the confederations’ agreement. Estadão reported that since beginning his coaching career in 2014, Seedorf has managed AC Milan, Shenzhen FC of China, Deportivo La Coruña of Spain and the Cameroon national team, accumulating nearly 27 months — below the 36 required.

SEEDORF RESPONDE SOBRE LICENÇA RECUSADA PELA CONMEBOL

Seedorf holds the UEFA Pro License, the highest coaching certification in Europe, but the license alone does not satisfy Conmebol’s experience threshold. In its appeal, Corinthians asked the confederation to count the three years Seedorf spent on the Supervisory Council of the Dutch football federation, along with his work as an instructor in UEFA coaching courses, Estadão reported. Conmebol declined, having already told UOL that the documentation had been analyzed by both confederations and that it would not open exceptions to the rule — a position it has now applied definitively.

The timeline that led to the rejection

Corinthians first submitted Seedorf’s credentials and was denied. The club then forwarded complementary documents to the CBF, which passed them to Conmebol for reconsideration. That second submission — the KNVB, Milan and Cameroon letters detailed by ESPN Brasil — was also rejected, with Conmebol informing the CBF that the additions do not qualify as coaching experience under the UEFA agreement, UOL reported.

In parallel, the CBF moved to keep Seedorf available for domestic matches. Estadão reported that the confederation approved his presence on the bench against São Paulo at Vila Belmiro in Santos based on its own provisional license, and that the documentation sent by the Dutch federation will be forwarded to UEFA for validation, with a definitive position expected back to Conmebol. That bureaucratic process, according to the CBF as relayed by Estadão, should conclude next week.

What Corinthians is weighing next

With Conmebol’s door closed, ESPN Brasil reported that the leading option inside the club is to enroll Seedorf in the CBF’s License B course, which is designed for former professional players; once registered as a student, he would receive a provisional license. That path has not been confirmed, and ESPN Brasil noted that uncertainty about 2027 — including the possibility of Seedorf leaving amid a relegation to Série B — has left the situation unresolved behind the scenes. Terra, meanwhile, reported that registering him as an assistant coach is another possibility under discussion, though it could impose limitations during matches.

Until one of those routes is completed, the arrangement is clear: Seedorf coaches, Porto signs. The Nov. 18 match against Botafogo is the first checkpoint where the restriction bites, and Corinthians’ remaining fixtures in the Brasileirão will all be played under that same structure if the License B enrollment or the UEFA validation does not land first.

The open question

What remains unanswered is whether UEFA’s validation of the Dutch federation’s documents — due back through the CBF and Conmebol next week — or a place in the CBF’s License B course will arrive before the season ends. Neither Conmebol nor the CBF has said which path, if either, will change Seedorf’s official status, and Corinthians has not confirmed which option it will pursue. The club’s next confirmed test comes on Nov. 18 against Botafogo, the first match in which Seedorf cannot appear as the officially listed head coach.
