Albian Ajeti netted twice and Yanis Cimignani added another as FC Lugano stunned Getafe CF with a 5-2 victory at the Coliseum in UEFA Conference League play, leaving the Spanish side reeling from their first defeat in the Conference League.

Early Scoring Flurry Sets Tone at the Coliseum

The match exploded into life immediately when Getafe’s Iván Azón intercepted a ball in the final third, drove forward, and curled a precise effort past goalkeeper David von Ballmoos in the 2nd minute. Marca noted that Albian Ajeti equalized for Lugano by scoring with his chest. Just five minutes later, Yanis Cimignani exploited structural weaknesses down Getafe’s left flank to fire the visitors ahead, capping a chaotic opening sequence that caught José Bordalás’s backline completely flat-footed.

Lugano Exposes Getafe Defense with Direct Balls

Lugano repeatedly unlocked Getafe’s defense with direct balls over the top, exposing central defender Abdel Abqar and Jean-Ives Valou. A long ball caught Abqar out of position in the 25th minute, allowing Dereck Moncada to cross for Ajeti to tap home his second goal of the night, prompting loud whistles from the home supporters as the players walked off at halftime. In response, Bordalás made four tactical substitutions at the interval, withdrawing Abqar, Davinchi, and Kiko Femenía, but Uran Bislimi extended Lugano’s lead to 4-1 just five minutes into the second half following another sloppy defensive clearance.

Late Strikes Leave Getafe Rooted Near the Bottom

Borja Mayoral briefly gave the home side a lifeline in the 73rd minute by reacting quickly to a loose ball in the penalty area to make it 4-2, aided by a deflection off Von Ballmoos. Despite late pressure that saw Nemanja Gudelj test the Swiss goalkeeper and Enes Ünal miss a close-range opportunity—having played through a right ankle sprain sustained shortly after coming on—Getafe failed to mount a complete comeback. Kevin Behrens sealed the emphatic win for Lugano in stoppage time following yet another defensive turnover in the Getafe half, confirming a 5-2 final scoreline that leaves the Spanish club with just one point from their opening two Conference League fixtures.
