Nottingham Forest have one win in eight in the Premier League this season. With one massive problem unacceptable for Oliver Glasner if relegation is to be avoided.

Eight games into the Premier League season, and Oliver Glasner has had a nightmare start on paper, in spite of how promising performances have been on paper. Ultimately, deserving to win will only get the side so far, with Liam Delap failing to convert chances, which has led to a massive underperformance.

Based on performances, Forest should be battling at the top end of the Premier League right now. But the results just haven’t been coming. Points should come if the performances continue at this level, but there is one underlying concern for Forest.

Nottingham Forest are struggling more at home than away

There has been a lot of talk around the underlying data this season, with Nottingham Forest massively underperforming expected points more than any other side this season.

But the data from UnderStat goes even further to show that away from home, no side has a higher expected points tally than Forest, sat top ahead of Manchester City.

Even in actual points, Forest sit eighth away from home with one win, two draws, and a defeat, which would be a respectable position. However, the form at the City Ground is where the real crisis is for Glasner.

Forest are winless at home and have the worst home record in the league this season, with one point from four. Two of these losses came against Leeds and Coventry, which need to be wins if Glasner is to drag the side up the table.

If Forest are able to make the City Ground a fortress, then the fortunes of this season would quickly change, with the away form already on the cusp of Europe. However, if he can’t win games at home, then there could be real trouble; an inability to win games at home almost always ends in relegation.

So this should be a matter of urgency against Brentford this weekend.

Why Oliver Glasner’s Setup Stalls Against Low Blocks

One factor in Glasner having much better performances and results away from home is that the system and style of football he plays suits not having the ball.

Without the ball, Glasner’s Forest can counter and beat disorganised defences. But at home, the expectation is that they will have the ball and opponents will allow it, with Glasner’s side unable to break down the low block.

Crystal Palace also suffered from this under Glasner, with their success often coming in games that they didn’t have the ball, and we are seeing a repeat of this with Forest.

Individual brilliance is one factor that could change this, in which Morgan Gibbs-White would be the man tasked with making things happen. Home games are going to be vital for Glasner in making sure relegation isn’t on the cards this season. But one thing’s certain, Forest need a home win against Brentford this weekend, otherwise murmurs could start.
